Kaneki's kakugan

Kaneki's left eye becomes a kakugan.

A kakugan (赫眼, red eye) refers to a distinctive ocular phenomenon observed in ghouls. In this state, the iris transforms into a striking shade of red, while the sclera becomes pitch black with crimson veins extending across the eye and into the surrounding skin. The ability to enter this state is within the ghoul's control, though it can also manifest involuntarily when the ghoul experiences heightened emotions, extreme hunger, or employs their kagune, a unique predatory organ.

The appearance of a kakugan is a direct manifestation of activated Rc cells, suggesting that it is an influential aspect of their biology. Typically, ghouls possess a pair of kakugan, and they habitually activate both eyes simultaneously. In the case of an individual having just one kakugan, they are referred to as a "one-eyed ghoul". However, a relatively recent hybrid category known as the Quinx shares this feature with one-eyed ghouls, wherein they possess only one kakugan, while their sclera adopts a gray hue (though depicted as black in the anime).

Interestingly, the Oggai, another unique group, hold the ability to control the activation of their kakugan, allowing them to choose between having none, one, or both eyes in the red-eyed state. As of now, the specific supplementary purpose, if any, of the kakugan remains shrouded in mystery, leaving much to be uncovered in the ongoing exploration of ghoul physiology.

Trivia[]

  • On numerous occasions, ghouls such as Tatara and Yamori are shown to have red irises and white scleras. They seem to be able to control whether the iris changes alone or the entire sclera blackens.
  • Uta's kakugan is always depicted with a black sclera, even in color pages.
  • The artificial one-eyed ghoul Kurona Yasuhisa and the Quinx Kuki Urie and Saiko Yonebayashi have all shown themselves having two kakugan for various reasons. Later, Hajime Hazuki would also display this trait suggesting that it may be indicative of hybrid ghouls that have developed beyond their previously established limits.
  • Oggai are ghouls that can activate one or two kakugan at their own will.
  • According to various theories, it is believed that the activation of the kakugan in one-eyed ghouls occurs in the eye that is opposite to the location of their kakuhou within their body.
